Contract Position for Alberta Sport Leadership Association reporting to the Board of Directors
Position Overview
The Executive Director (ED) of the Alberta Sport Leadership Association serves as the chief administrative officer, responsible for leading the organization during its start-up stage to fulfill its mission of enhancing Alberta’s sport community by promoting the positive values and benefits of sport. The ED will collaborate to create a collective voice to address the variety of challenges faced by the sport community and provide strategic leadership within the sport community.
This dynamic and strategic leader will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s strategic plan and associated programs, member services, operational and board policy development and other initiatives to enhance the success and sustainability of organized sport across Alberta.
The ED will be responsible for the organization's day-to-day operations, ensuring alignment with the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors, and will act as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the association. This role will lead ASLA in a manner that aligns with and advances the organization’s Vision, Mission, Values and Goals as defined by its Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities
1. Operations and Organizational Administration
Ensure effective day-to-day operations, including strategic planning, legal compliance, and human resources management.
Assume responsibility for maintaining the fiscal integrity of ASLA.
Support and development of operational and board policy
Facilitate communication and collaboration between the Board of Directors and staff.
Lead the development, implementation and reporting of the association’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with its mission and vision.
2. Financial Management
Assume responsibility for maintaining the fiscal integrity of ASLA.
Develop, oversee, and manage the annual budget to ensure fiscal responsibility, compliance with funding agreements, and sustainability.
Identify and pursue revenue generation and funding opportunities, including grants, sponsorships, and partnerships.
Manage the organization’s finances according to the approved budget and authorize expenditures within the delegated authority approved by the board.
Support financial operations, ensuring efficient bookkeeping, record-keeping, and reporting processes are in place and are compliant with relevant taxation and legislative requirements.
Identify and assess risks to the organization’s personnel, assets, finances, reputation, and image, and implement measures to mitigate these risks.
3. Partner and Government Relations
Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, corporate partners, and community organizations.
Provide support for the Safe Sport initiative.
Represent the association in discussions with policymakers to advocate for sport development and support the organized sport community.
4. Member Relations, Advocacy, and Support
Serve as an ambassador and key point of contact for Alberta’s PSOs, MSOs and Alberta Sport Councils, fostering collaboration and communication.
Advocate for the needs and interests of the sporting community to stakeholders and the public.
Provide resources, tools, and support to strengthen member organizations.
5. Marketing and Communications
Develop and execute marketing campaigns to enhance the association’s visibility and brand.
Develop and manage ongoing stakeholder and member communication strategies, including information releases and social media engagement.
Maintain and evolve the website and other digital properties to increase the profile of the organization and engagement of stakeholders.
6. Public and Media Relations
Collaborate with the Chair to serve as the public face and spokesperson, and public/media relations representative, promoting its mission and activities and strengthening its profile.
Implement and maintain a responsive system for promptly addressing member inquiries and crisis communications.
7. Event Management
Oversee the planning and execution of education, training, and networking events for PSOs.
Ensure events align with the association’s goals and deliver value to members.
8. Reporting
Ensure timely and accurate reporting to funding partners, government bodies, members, and the Board of Directors.
Provide regular updates on organizational performance, strategic initiatives, and financial health.
There is an expectation that you will be available for travel commitments to attend meetings, presentations, training sessions, and program initiatives that may fall outside of regular work hours. There may also be additional work requested of you that is outside the position description but falls within the overall operations of the ASLA.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Sport Management, or a related field. A master’s degree is an asset.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role, preferably within the sport, nonprofit, or government sectors.
Proven track record in strategy development, financial management, advocacy, media and stakeholder relations.
Experience working with or supporting PSOs is highly desirable.
Skills and Competencies

Compensation
The contract will run until April 2027 and will be reviewed semiannually, with the possibility of extension beyond 2027.
